Start Small

Let’s face it – weight loss can be discouraging.  Especially for those of us who have a large amount to lose, our ultimate goals can seem far away.  To keep your motivation high, make short-term goals you can reach more quickly and easily.  Regularly celebrating small victories along the way is a much better way of looking at the big picture than waiting around to reach your long-term goal. 
More importantly, short-term goals don’t have to be on the scale or in your closet.  Aim for behavior-based goals like, “I will come up with a plan for our office Christmas party and stick to it,” or “I will walk 3 days this week, despite the cold” – both can be challenging, but both are definitely attainable short-term goals.  YOU control these activities, and succeeding at each small goal is a step in the right direction to your long-term goal. 
Write down what you’d like to achieve and keep the list out where you can see it often, and tell your friends and family about what you’re striving for.  Staying accountable to yourself and others will help you reach these steps easier, and putting these healthy habits into practice makes you more likely to keep doing them long-term!
