"A child reminds us that playtime is an essential part of our daily routine." - Unknown
Schools are letting out for summer vacation, which means that the daily routines of many people are getting thrown out of whack. We quickly realize how much a consistent routine helps us with our weight loss efforts - pre-packaging school lunches makes it easier to fix healthy options for ourselves; a consistently early bedtime helps curb nighttime snacking; and meals held at the table usually leave less temptation than backyard barbeques. However, getting out of routine during the summer can be used as an opportunity.
Being around your kids reminds you how active they are (and how active we adults usually aren't), and it enables you to participate in activities that the schoolyear grind might now allow. Even if you don't have kids, there's an air of excitement this time of year that makes you want to just get out and move! During those backyard barbeques, play badminton or throw a football around. On the weekends, pre-package a picnic lunch and take a hike. Think about your daily routine and ways you can inject some fun; even turning on your favorite music while you clean the house will make you move and shake a little more while finishing your chores. We could all use a little more fun in our daily routine, so take advantage of the summer break, even if you don't get one - act like a kid again and burn some extra calories in the process!
